Roads

For Wales: Road speed limits need to be appropriate. Blanket policies do not work. Remove bureaucracy and red tape that prevents councils from designating the right speed limit for the right stretch of road. Build roads to connect communities and bypass congestion hotspots.

Build the M4 bypass at Newport to address the Brynglas Tunnel pinch point.

Upgrade the A483 / A470 to speed up cross-country journeys from South to North Wales.

For Carmarthenshire: Review speed limits, avoiding multiple changes in short spaces. The right speed for the right road to help people get where they need to go quickly and safely. 

Build the Gwendraeth Valley Link Road between Cross Hands and Kidwelly to connect communities to jobs and reduce congestion at Llanelli and Carmarthen.

Build the Sandy Road bypass in Llanelli to move through traffic away from congested local streets.

Build the Llandeilo bypass to move through traffic from narrow streets and reduce pollution.

Upgrade the A48 between the M4 at Pont Abraham and Carmarthen to either express route or motorway standard with grade separated junctions addressing congestion at Cross Hands and Carmarthen, separating through traffic from local traffic.

Railways

For Wales: Fairer funding for Welsh rail investment. HS2 and England’s Oxford to Cambridge rail lines are classed as England and Wales investment. Wales cannot continue to be forgotten and lose out in vital infrastructure funding. We need:

• A direct rail connection from West Wales to Cardiff Airport
• A direct rail connection from West Wales to Heathrow Airport
• A rail link between Carmarthen and Aberystwyth and onto the Midlands

For Carmarthenshire: 

• Build the Carmarthen to Aberystwyth rail link, including stations at Llandysul, Llanybydder and Lampeter.
• Build the St Clears train station
• More reliable and frequent train services

Buses

For Wales: Proposed bus franchising needs to be adequately funded and provide regular, affordable journeys where people actually need to travel. If an attractive and convenient bus service is available, then people will use it. Wales cannot continue to see a lack of investment resulting in irregular, expensive and unreliable bus services that don’t go where people want to go.

For Carmarthenshire: Connect communities with regular, reliable services that help people get to jobs, health services, shopping, family and friends.

Active Travel

For Wales: New walking and cycling routes need to be joined up and benefit local communities. Leisure routes are fine, but we need to help people get where they need to and to bring prosperity to our town and village centres.

For Carmarthenshire:

• I would like residents and businesses to have better and more meaningful input into where new cycle and walking routes are constructed. Cost benefit analysis should be implemented before plans are taken forward that show how a community will benefit over time, making sure tax payers get value for money.
• I would like to see the Kidwelly to Ferryside off-road cycle and walking link constructed – joining the Carmarthen Bay Holiday Camp with the town and improving connection with the town’s railway station with a new bridge over the river Gwendraeth.
