The plan, which could involve major construction work and long periods of disruption, follows a series of serious collisions on the road. But Carl says the proposal risks creating more congestion and delays, not less.

“The solution to the dangerous A48 does not lie in years of construction, disruption and delays — only to leave us with even more congestion at a brand‑new roundabout at Nantycaws,” Carl said. “This is a vital trunk route. We need a serious upgrade, not another bottleneck.”

Carl points out that the existing roundabouts between the end of the M4 and the A40 at Carmarthen are already among the busiest — and most daunting — junctions in west Wales.

“Anyone who drives this stretch knows how heavily loaded these roundabouts already are. Adding another one will simply move the problem further up the road and make the whole route slower and more dangerous.”

Instead, Carl is calling for a strategic upgrade that reflects the importance of the A48 to Carmarthenshire and west Wales.

His proposals include:

• Closing the side‑access points onto the A48
• Upgrading existing junctions to full grade‑separated status
• Beginning work to extend the M4 to Carmarthen

“My manifesto is clear: Wales needs modern, safe, future‑proof transport links,” Carl said. “The A48 is a perfect example of where ambition has been replaced by short‑term fixes. People deserve better.”

Carl says the debate over the A48 shows why Carmarthenshire needs independent voices who will push for practical, long‑term upgrades rather than party‑political sticking plasters.
